Version 1.7 — March 2026
2026 0ware. Freely distributed.
—
- Introduction
openosx, the operating system, is a Linux distribution based on Debian, developed by a single independent developer under the codename admin0, within the openosx os project.
Its goal is to preserve and modernize legacy Macintosh hardware, keeping the look and feel of classic macOS while using a fully open-source foundation. (with the exception of some drivers)
This project is not affiliated with Apple Inc., OpenOSX, OpenOSX Inc. or any other company. It is an independent, community-driven initiative created for educational, preservation, and experimental purposes.
—
- Nature of the Software
openosx is composed mostly of free and open-source software, distributed under licenses recognized by the Open Source Initiative (OSI), including but not limited to:
GNU General Public License (GPL)
MIT License
Apache License
BSD Licenses
All integrated packages remain the property of their original authors and communities. openosx merely assembles and configures them in accordance with their respective licenses.
—
- User Rights and Freedoms

—
- Licensing
openosx complies fully with the licenses of the upstream projects it includes, primarily the GNU/GPL family.

Neither admin0, 0ware, nor any contributor shall be held liable for any damages, data loss, or hardware issues resulting from the use or misuse of this software.
By using openosx, you accept that you run it at your own risk — and for your own enjoyment.
—
- Credits and Acknowledgments
openosx exists thanks to the collective effort of the Debian, Linux and BSD communities, and many other open-source projects.
Without their dedication to free software, this system could not exist.
—
- Philosophy
openosx was built out of curiosity and respect for old machines — to give legacy Intel Macs a second life through the flexibility and power of Debian.
Created by admin0 (0ware), it stands for the right to repair, hardware reuse, and technological freedom.
It is not just an operating system — it’s a tribute to independence, creativity, and digital resilience.
